| FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) What happens during the consultation? The tutor, student and parent(s) discuss the current challenges the student is facing, the study plan and environment, other factors that may affect the student's potential achievement, and any questions or concerns you may have regarding the tutoring process. The free consultation may be completed by phone, or during a home visit. What should I bring to an evaluation or consultation? It is a good idea to have a copy of the student's most recent report card or interim progress report, along with any standardized test results. If applicable, bring copies of any student assessments, testing, evaluations from school, medical, or private testing. Samples of student work may also be helpful. How often does tutor meet with Student? Typically, the tutor meets with the student once per week for one hour each session. Depending on whether the student has catch-up work, late assignments, motivational concerns, or learning challenges, the recommended frequency may be higher. Ultimately, the frequency is determined by the parent. I highly recommend two sessions per week for remedial students. Where does tutoring take place? During after school hours (2:30 - 6:30) tutoring sessions are held at Sancta Familia Academy in Melbourne. Sessions scheduled before 2:30 on school days can take place at your home or another location of your choice. (examples: public library, community center, or your child's daycare) What study materials does the student use? During the school year, we can work with a student's school texts, but we will also use supplementary materials that will help the student better understand concepts which are causing difficulty for the student. During the summer and for our special programs, the tutor provides the materials the student will use. To learn about some of the materials we use, see our links page. There are also required texts for some courses, such as the SAT Preparation. For homeschool tutoring, parents purchase the core curriculum which we can assist them in choosing. How long is a tutoring session? Pre-K thru 1st grade sessions are 45 minutes long. These sessions have a shorter instruction time because children of this age retain more knowledge and have a better attention span when lessons are not too long. Sessions for all other grades and levels are 1 hour unless a longer duration is desired. How long will my child need a tutor? First, we assess your child and determine his or her academic goals. Once those goals are met, you can choose to end private tutoring or set new goals and continue with a new customized tutoring plan. The time required to reach individual goals varies for each child. At any time, you may receive updates on your child's progress from the tutor, your child, or your child's teacher. Why should I use a certified tutor? A professional tutor attends educational workshops, networks with other educational professionals to discuss innovative teaching strategies, evaluates and recommends effective self-study curricula, maintains a flexible schedule, and keeps regular contact with student, parents and teachers, as requested, to ensure the student's maximum success and a positive tutoring experience for all. Tutor certification can be achieved through various agencies requiring rigorous evaluation of a candidate's educational background and career objectives; tutoring, presentation and publication experience; graduate work, literacy projects and community service. Certification is often renewable and organizations offer continuing education to member-tutors. See how tutor certification differs from teacher certification. How will I know if Tutoring is working? Your child will demonstrate increased self-confidence and an improved attitude about school and homework. Instead of settling for average results, your child will want to strive for top marks. Once your child sees that s/he can learn and be successful, s/he will be encouraged to achieve his/her fullest potential. How does phone, email, and online tutoring work? Please Click Here for information regarding on-line and e-mail tutoring. Do you provide assessments? Yes! We have assessments available in math and English for grades K - 12. Do I have to pay any assessment/registration fees? Initial consultation is free. A general assessment will be made in order to determine your child's current abilities and challenges. Certain tests and screenings are available at an additional charge. Some Tutor Advantage programs require a registration fee to cover the cost of initial texts and/or materials. Do you require contracts? No. Flexible scheduling allows you to reschedule in case of emergency, personal or family needs or for any other reason. We respectfully request that you give your Tutor prior notice of cancellation. Please refer to the Tutorial Agreement for related information. How do I save time and money using a Personal Tutoring, instead of sending my child to an educational center? An educational center may incorporate a lengthy and expensive assessment period into its tutoring program which could take several weeks to complete, delaying the actual tutoring sessions. Our initial assessment allows us to customize tutoring specifically for your child. Ongoing evaluation occurs through observation of and interaction with your child. We confront and remove obstacles as they are encountered, thereby maximizing the time that your child and the tutor spend together. Progress reports are provided regularly or by request. Educational centers typically provide instruction in a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio of tutor to students, rather than individually. (comparison chart) We can save significant time and achieve long-term benefits using a one-to-one tutoring approach. A student receives direct, immediate attention for unique concerns, develops rapport with his or her personal tutor facilitating trust and communication, and can experience more rapid progress. For your convenience, we offer both one-to-one or discounted group tutoring options. Educational centers usually require a contract between parties that may hold the client responsible for the entire cost of missed sessions, regardless of the reason, without the flexibility of rescheduling. Learning center contracts often require 4-5 hours of tutoring per week when students can experience significant academic improvement with only 1-2 hours of tutoring per week. While we may offer pre-payment discounts, no contracts are required. (Ask about our referral program, scholarships, and credit for paid assessments or evaluations.) Finally, home-tutoring is an option and your personal tutor can come right to your door, or to an alternative location, and tutor your student in an environment that is comfortable and convenient for you. (See "Why Choose a Personal Tutor") What is the hourly rate? The in-home tutoring rate is determined by several factors: Please consult the Rate Chart or the tutor to determine your applicable rate. Payments must be made prior to each session using one of the following methods: Personal check, money order or currency given directly to your tutor; Credit card, using PayPal.
