Compare Prices and Services
Call tutors and learning centers in your area for prices and information about their
programs.  Some information can be obtained through websites.  Use links to see my
answers.

1.  Ask about
student requirements
  • How many hours per week?
  • How many weeks expected?
  • Is there a contract?
  • What is the price per session or per week?
  • What is the cancellation policy
    - for missed session
    - for contract

2.  Ask about
services and options, including methods and approaches used to
accomplish goals.
  • How are goals set?
  • Is there an interview, evaluation, standardized test?
  • What about parent input?
  • What are the hours of operation?
  • What is the tutor to student ratio?  (1:1 or 1:3 or more)
  • Is there dependence on the use of computers or worksheets?
  • Will homework be assigned with concepts reinforced at home between sessions?
  • If there is a need for language instruction (reading, writing, spelling, phonics) is the
tutor trained in an Orton-Gillingham approach?

3.  Consider your needs and be sure the tutor or center offers the specific services you
are seeking.
  • Is the focus on remediation?  (Therapy or Tutoring?)
  • Is the focus on homework assistance or catching up in class at school?
  • Is the focus on test preparation such as the FCAT, SAT, or ACT?
  • Do they accept average students?
  • Do they offer anything for gifted students?
  • Will your student simply catch up on missed information and content, or will she
become a self-motivated learner, acquiring skills that will carry over to all subjects
    for years to come?
  • If the focus is on subjects, which subjects are available?

The Tutor Advantage, offered by Academic Consulting and Tutoring Services, offers
traditional tutoring (special subjects, homework help, test preparation), accelerated
programs, educational therapy, and training in cognitive skills.  We also offer academic
consultation for after-school as well as home-school.
Step 4:  Contact the tutor or center that best fits your needs and set up an initial
interview or consultation.  Take advantage of no obligation evaluations in order to get
a plan for your student.  You may have short term goals, or you may wish to continue
tutoring to keep your child on or even above grade level.  Does the tutor address your
concerns in her educational plan for your child?
